Ava’s Promise Equine Rescue and Sanctuary

About Us

Welcome to Ava’s Promise Equine Rescue and Sanctuary

Here at Ava’s Promise, we’re all about heart, hope, and a whole lot of love for our two- and four-legged friends. Our journey started as a humble hobby farm in September 2020, where our passion for animals grew day by day. Then, in April 2022, a little donkey named Ava changed everything.

Ava gave birth to her foal, Bodhi, in a Louisiana kill pen. She was being sent to slaughter, having been cruelly misrepresented as a male donkey instead of a pregnant female. Shortly after Bodhi’s birth, we rescued them both and brought them to the safety of our farm. We did everything we could to help Ava recover, but she tragically succumbed to pneumonia. Before she passed, we made her a promise: that Bodhi would live the life she never got—a safe, happy, and love-filled one. And from that promise, Ava’s Promise Equine Rescue and Sanctuary was born.

Run by Sandi and Mike Smellie, supported by an incredible Board of Directors, and powered by dedicated volunteers and co-workers, we’re not just rescuing animals—we’re building a family. Our mission is simple: to rescue, rehabilitate, and give equines in need a second chance at life. But it’s about more than just shelter; it’s about creating a place where animals can live naturally, form bonds, and thrive in herds the way they were meant to.

We also believe in bringing people along for the journey! Whether it’s through fun and educational Donkey Day events, hands-on 4H programs, supporting other rescues, or sharing updates on social media, we love connecting with our community. Together, we can spread the word about kindness and compassion for these amazing animals.

As a proud Iowa Public Nonprofit 501(c)(3), Ava’s Promise Equine Rescue and Sanctuary Inc. is here to make a difference—for Ava, for Bodhi, and for every equine who needs us. Thank you for being part of this journey with us.
